Think twice when choosing GS Metal Works
Posted by: MargaritaS - 09-07-2016, 02:39 PM - Forum: Grilles - Replies (2)

Just sharing this with fellow home makers :
Beware of GS Metal Works klang - the lock they installed on my gate was spoiled within three months of use. When asked for replacement, they charged for another lock plus workmanship fee Dodgy The sales person said it is not covered by warranty. What?!!

Due to no choice (I can't lock my door daily), I paid them to change the lock anyway. Only to find out that the Guchi lockset they use actually has a 5-year warranty written on the box.

Just be careful of this cut-throat GS Metal Works.

  Looking for Wardrobe design
Posted by: faris - 15-02-2016, 12:26 AM - Forum: Wardrobe - Replies (1)

I am looking for some wardrobe design for my apartment. Are there designers who specialize in wardrobe design? Some basic questions below :
1) What is the maximum space between each compartment?
1) What is the minimum height to hang dresses?
2) What is the minimum width to hang coats?

And what are the different material available for custom@built-in wardrobe..? eg. melamine, 3G, 4G..??

Thx Renotalk

  Round vs Square Downlight
Posted by: user - 09-10-2015, 10:43 PM - Forum: Lighting - No Replies

Most new home owners would look for LED downlights for their house lighting. And most would not realize the difference between round and square shaped downlights.

Technically, both types of LED downlights are the same (wattage, colors and brightness - provided the same brand offers both shapes).

But square LED downlight would require accurate opening of holes on the ceiling or otherwise, slight misalignment would be very visible due to the geometric shape. The side of each downlight would have be fitted in a straight line. Thus, you should ensure you hired an experienced installer to install square downlight. Many of them would use a laser marking or cutting device to do the job.

Round LED downlight on the other hand, does not require such strict alignment between each downlight and some margin of error would not be too visible. Opening hole in the ceiling using hand saw is common and gives decent result.

What's your experience in using round vs square LED downlights?

  Tiles Buying Guide
Posted by: user - 11-05-2015, 02:20 AM - Forum: Tiles - No Replies

There are in general 3 types of tiles for renovation in Malaysia :

  • Ceramic tiles - These are the traditional white square tiles used in bathrooms and its family. It is usually
  • Porcelain tiles - These are what tiles supplier call 'hard' tiles. They can be used indoor and outdoor. Porcelain tiles have full-bodied (the top of the tile reflects the whole piece design, even inside) and colored-bodied (only the top of the tile is colored with the design) variations.
  • Granite tiles - These are granite stones cut into tile size. They normally cost more than porcelain and ceramic tiles.
(There are mosaic tiles, which is another category altogether)

Depending on the tiles surface, it may be used for walls, floors or both. There are generally rough, matt and glazed (aka. polished) surfaces. Naturally, for floor tiles you would want to choose one with good surface abrasion to prevent slipping.

Common sizes today are (feet x feet) 2' x 2', 2' x 1', 1' x 1' and of course, various other custom sizes.

The same tiles may be graded as 'No. 1' and 'No. 2' tiles. 'No. 1' tiles fit the quality standard in terms of color and size uniformity, whereas 'No. 2' may have slight variation (but still very much usable for renovation). So be aware while shopping when the tiles are seemingly sold at cheaper price.

Tip : Tiles are manufactured in batches and different batches of the same design may vary in terms of color, size, etc. Moreover, production for a series tiles may stop for new series to be manufactured. Always buy extra pieces of tiles for future replacement needs.

  Mattress Buying Guide
Posted by: user - 07-05-2015, 02:55 AM - Forum: Bedroom - Replies (1)

Mattresses available on the Malaysia market are commonly made with following material :

  • Bonnell spring - One piece of linked springs over the whole bed. This is the traditional mattress design.
  • Pocketed spring - Multiple individual springs for minimum partner disturbance.
  • Memory foam - Synthetic foam material that returns to its original shape for back support.
  • Natural latex - Made from 100% natural rubber foam (no springs).
In addition to above, the mattress may have combination layers of cooling gel, coconut fiber and additional rubber/memory foam.

There are 4 sizes to choose from :
  • King : 6 feet x 6.5 feet (width x length)
  • Queen : 5 feet x 6.5 feet (width x length)
  • Super Single : 3 feet x 6.5 feet (width x length)
  • Single : 3 feet x 6 feet (width x length)
Mattress height usually starts at 8 inches and thicker ones up to 12 inches.

In Malaysia, mattress warranty offered ranges from 10 to 15 years.

Tip : Match your mattress with your divan to for the right height and size.
